I have an iphone 2G, and i tunes 8 on my MBP. Using pwanage I can go through the process and get pwanage to say phone has successfully entered DFU mode. However iTunes then launches with message: ' an iPod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPod, then try again. An unknown error occurred (2001)'.

Tried several times with the same response. Can anyone help please.

If you have updated OS X to 10.5.6 it disables the jailbreak process. You need to download this file http://limitededitioniphone.com/fix-dfu-on-mac-os-x-1056/ follow instructions and then you should be okay. If you have done that just keep trying and eventually it will jailbreak properly.
