cannot restore partition size in OSX

I removed a partition I was going to use to install windows 8 consumer preview. It didnt work, so I removed that partition, leaving the windows 7 and osx lion partitions. Why can't I resize my osx partition to what it originally was before? Why can't I option+boot into the old windows 7 partition anymore either?
