Last night I was in the process of doing a yearly back up of my iTunes Library (stored on an external drive) to another external drive using Carbon Copy Cloner.

Mid way through the backup, the program stopped and said there was an issue with being able to read data from the source. I tried to open the external drive my library is stored on and Catalina kept freezing when I tried to open the volume. Catalina would also freeze when I tried to unmount the drive. I tried using First Aid and it failed because it could not unmount the drive.

After several attempts, I was finally able to erase the volume (I decided to simply copy the backup from my second external drive to the first one). After I erased the first external drive, I decided to run First Aid before I start the long process of copying my iTunes library back to it. However, the First Aid failed (see image).

Any idea what could be causing this? Is the drive dead?

Probably not dead, but dying. If its something that always occurs, then i'd get a new drive and try and transfer what i can, and/or recovery tools for mac like DiskDrill

You could reformat, but i wouldn't rely on it as i don't think its software problem..
