Cannot see CD contents on Imac or Itunes

I put a .cda format CD into my Imac and nothing happens either on the mac or Itunes. But I can do an explore thru the VMware I am running and access the cd contents. This also happens with other formats (pics, docs, etc) I put in the cd rom...

Why am I unable to control my cd from the mac?
