Yes.

If the SMTP server that you're trying to send email through requires authentication (per your PowerBook settings), and your iPhone is trying to send email without authenticating, that's not likely to work.

Wnut, I have the same issue, I cannot find anywhere how to resolve it. Please let me know if you had any luck with the issue.
You should read up on how the SMTP server you're trying to use works. Some require authentication. Some require that you be on a certain network in order to send email. (i.e. my cable modem provider has a SMTP server that only works if I'm using their cable modem network ... I can not use their SMTP server from my iPhone when I'm using AT&T's network, however, if I'm at home and my iPhone is using WiFi that's connected to their network, it works fine).

Sounds like your Incoming email is working, and your Outgoing email is not. Check your Outgoing SMTP settings, and Network Connections. Try this Apple website for fixing your email settings: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1426
Hope this helps.

Well it's not that it doesn't on cell network, it also doesn't work on wifi. I even went into the smtp servers list and activated the AT&T smtp server but it still doesn't work. I must be missing something here. :(

Your outgoing server settings are not correct, set it to the same as your powerbook.

But they are the same. I'm talking to a MobileMe specialist right now, she has no idea why I am having the issue. She's getting help from someone else, I'll update when I get more info.

UPDATE: She say's it'll be another 30 minute wait to get through to another specialist. So basically I'm on chat-hold for another 30 minutes before I get any closer to getting functionality I'm paying $100/year for.

Sorry, I thought they were matching? Are you attempting to set up IMAP or POP? That's good that you're getting MobileMe support. Good luck.

Just a simple mobileme IMAP account, shouldn't be all sorts of settings to play with anyway, the .mac and MobileMe accounts just need the email and password and the phone sets it up itself. I just don't get why this is such an issue. (Still on hold)

Edit: To clear up possible confusion, I'm not the OP. Haha
