cannot send message using the server .......

Hi

I can receive email but when it comes to sending I keep getting the message " cannot send message using the server ........ "
My OS is 10.6.8 and my mail 4.6 (1085).
I have tried many many solutions which I have obtained from here and the Apple forum but to no avail.
Can anyone tell me what the problem is.
