Hi folks,

I have an older model MacBookPro, circa 2008. I'm running Mavericks. The details are below:

Processor Name Intel Core 2 Duo
Model Identifier MacBookPro4,1
Processor Name Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed 2.5 GHz
Bus Speed 800 MHz

L2 Cache 6 MB
Memory 4 GB 667 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM

Boot ROM Version MBP41.00C1.B03
SMC Version (system) 1.28f3
Graphics Card NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 512MB

For the past few days I cannot lock the screen manually, and the system is not locked when I come out of sleep.

I went to System Preferences and toggled the screen lock setting in Security & Privacy. That didn't work either.

Also, the screen luminosity buttons (upper row at left) are not working; neither is the keyboard back light.

I tried the following:
Apple -> Restart ...
Apple -> Log Out ...
Apple -> Shut Down ...

None of these worked. But I'm wondering if someone can lead me to a more "elegant" way to restart and see if the problems are solved after a reboot.

I'm going to open a bash shell and "shutdown". If that doesn't work I'll have to just remove the battery to shut down the system (I have backed up everything).

I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if they've experienced this problem and whether it was just an OS glitch solved by a reboot or whether it sounds hardware related. I can imagine how the malfunction of the ambient light sensor would affect the keyboard back lighting. But I have no idea what hardware problem could be causing the other problems. While the system is up everything seems to work fine (all applications).

Thanks in advance.

Well, actually I did "sudo reboot" from the bash shell and that fixed the problems. I'm not sure why I could not "reset" the screen lock function from the System Preferences -> Security & Privacy screen. Anyway, problem seems to be solved.
