iPod touch cannot type certain characters on keyboard

I cannot type characters 'c' and 'v' on the keyboard, but if I press the '123' to change to numbers the ',' and '?' which appear in the same place on the screen work ok. this leads me to think that the software is at fault not the screen.

Has anybody else found this problem? and how do I fix it please?

(brand new ipod touch 32GB version 2.0.1)
