cannot upgrade to 3.0

hi guys .

Im trying to update my wife`s 3g phone running 2.1.
It has never been jail broken . When I try to update it to 3.0 via iTunes 8.2 it starts backing it up and half way thru says iPhone got disconnected . This has happened twice . Can any body help ?
