A friend just gave me a used Canon Multipass MP390 printer. It's broken and no longer works as a printer/photocopier/fax machine, but the built in scanner still works. I just wanted to know if it's Mac compatible before I bother setting it up.

No it's not.
I used to have one and only got the printing to work with some gimp hacks but never the scanner even with 3rd party apps.
You can look on canon's website and see if they ever made any driver and software for OSX but I doubt it as this model has been discontinued.
