I had a computer die on me back in June 2010 but I saved its contents on an external hard drive via time machine. There are some documents and pictures I want on this hard drive but I'm unable to find them on my new computer using the finder and when I double click the folders (let's say…Documents) in the Users folders I get the message "The folder “Documents” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents."

How do I find and get access to the files I want?

Did you use file vault on the other machine? I had the same problem/message when trying to acess time machine files when I had backed up using file vault/encrypted files. How to fix? IDK, sorry!
