Can't access hard drive on mac

I have recently bought a hitachi xl 1000 1tb hard drive. when i plug it into the mac i am unable to find it even on the disk utility. i can connect it to my old pc however as it is 1tb i can not access it or format it. i can't even create a partition using the pc as it is too old and slow to do anything useful. is there a way to use parallels to access it and format it from there. i just want to get it to work on the mac.
