I'm not terribly conversant about the 24" Cinema displaly but on my 2013 13" MacBook Pro my older 23" Cinema display is plugged into the HDMI port with a simple adapter, freeing my 2 Thunderbolt ports for their stuff. However, apparently from my shopping around, the 24" is incapable of adapting simply (economically) to the HDMI port, instead requiring a $150 "adapter". The gender of the simple adapters is opposite what's required. (I happen not to care about the audio channel to the monitor.) So carefully check your port availability and compatibility including simple economical adapters.
