Can't backup iPad Air 2 to iTunes 12.2

the title says it all.....

I'm using latest version of OS X and iOS. I have backed the iPad up via wifi to iCloud, but wanted to backup and archive a backup on iTunes. When I connect the iPad, iTunes immediately wants me to set it up as new or restore it from a backup that's not there. When I select Devices, sync and backup are greyed out. I've restarted both the Mac and the iPad.....nothing works.

Anyone have any ideas?

Hmmm, no ideas.

I just wonder if it's iTunes, the iPad or my Mac that is at fault.
