Can't boot from mSATA SSD iBook G3 Snow

I've swopped the hard drive in my Snow iBook G3 for a mSATA SSD with an adaptor. The iBook can see the drive, format it, and I can install Tiger to it. The statup disk utility in the Tiger DVD installer can then subsquently see the Tiger installation on the SSD, and I can select it to restart too. However if fails to boot, and gives folder with the question mark on boot. Holding down option on boot, and it doesn't see the Tiger installtion either.

Any ideas? Caveat - it is a 512GB SSD, of which the iBook only sees 128GB. I am, however, installing into a 128GB partition.
