Can't boot iBook from external hard drive

I have an iBook G3, and recently bought an Iomega eGo Portable hard drive. I installed OS 10.4, but am unable to boot iBook from this drive, using System 10.4. Any suggestions or insights.

do you use usb or firewire? i think i remember that ibooks only boot from firewire..

Yes, I am using a firewire connection, but no luck.

Sorry if you've done the obvious already, but how did you format the external drive? With GUID or Apple Partition table?
