can't change battery settings in energy saver panel

If I go to Energy Saver, there are two sections- battery and power adapter.
Both battery options are put to never and I can't change it. Also I can't enable the show battery status in menu bar. I erased different plist files to fix the issue, but no avail.

Any ideas?
 
ok. the problem was bad permissions on kext files. used a third party tool called kext utility to fix that
