Can't change external harddrive icon? Weird issue.

Just formatted my new external drive as exFAT. I tried to change the icon but this keeps happening. I reformatted the drive as OS X Journaled and I was able to change the icon. But when I format as exFAT I get this weird icon error. See the pic attached. Anyone know about this or why it's happening?

(Also, the date shows up as 1980, what is going on?)

Do you have Read/Write access and is your time set right?

I just ran into a similar problem. I think maybe exFAT can't handle the large size icons. I stripped the 256x256 and 512x512 icons from my .ico file, and then I was able to apply it without a problem.
