I like to have a different login background than the stock one, and I had no problems with it previously. I think, though, since the 10.6.6 update I've had problems with it. I tried using MacPilot like I have in the past, and that didn't work. I tried going into the CoreServices folder like I had in the past, and that told me I didn't have permission to change such files (even though I'm an Admin user on this account).

Anyone else having problems with this same issue?

Is this the procedure you used?

To replace login screen background:
  1. Enter the following commands in Terminal, pressing Enter after each:
    • cd /System/Library/CoreServices
    • sudo mv DefaultDesktop.jpg DefaultDesktop_Old.jpg (enter password when prompted)
  2. Quit Terminal
  3. Rename desired image to DefaultDesktop.jpg
  4. In Finder, drag and drop the image into /System/Library/CoreServices
  5. When asked, click Authenticate and enter user name and password for your Admin-level account.
  6. Restart
