iPod touch Can't control iPod with stereo remote?

I have a 1st gen iPod touch and up until the latest filmware update I was able to control it via a remote when it was connected to my stereo.
Now I can't control skipping songs, pausing songs, etc.

Is there something I'm doing wrong?
