Can't copy data from ipod in disk mode to MBP

I have my 5G Ipod set in disk mode and transfered all of my music on to it before installing leopard. Now I'm trying to get it back on to the laptop and am having trouble. While it's transferring the music, the ipod will randomly become unresponsive and stop transferring. I have to relaunch Finder every time I want to close the transfer windows. I've got about 45 gigs of music, but even doing it in chunks, it will randomly time out.
