this is a wierd question, and it's probably an obvious answer that I'm missing, but I can't seem to use the "cut" function in ANY application! Whether it's Textedit or MS Word, the Cut funtion is greyed out and I can't do the OpenApple+x key combo. Any ideas?

Why dont you use the COPY option and then just delete what you copy? or is that grayed out as well?

maybe you're just switching from Windows but on the Mac the "Cut" function is for text only. it doesn't work for files, folders, etc. prevents you from accidentally hitting a keyboard shortcut and deleting an important document. highlight some text and you'll see the Cut command appear.
