Can't delete apps after failing to update them

I tried to update a couple apps, but because my wireless internet is awful it won't fully download, and now these apps are stuck not working. I tried airplane mode and rebooting the phone, but now they are just gray icons that say "Waiting..." beneath them. I tried syncing to iTunes and removing the apps from there, but they wouldn't go away still. I also tried downloading the updates through iTunes and syncing, but they are still broken and won't load.

Sounds like something bugged in the software... Hopefully you have a backup through iTunes, sounds like that's your only option now, so try restore from previous backup. If holding down the updating app doesn't make it jiggle, that's probably the only way now.
