"can't delete backup item"

On my 5,1 Mac Pro (OS 10.7.5) I find that I can't delete items in Google Drive folder. The only backup utility I' running is Time Machine and I switched it off, on the off chance that the settings somehow got screwed up, but to no avail. This just cropped up; previously I had been able to delete files from the folder. I'm pretty sure I'm missing something simple, but what? Any insights appreciated.
