Can't edit address book birthdays

Recently, Address Book has decided not to show birthdays that I have entered. I have entered them in one of two ways: on my iPhone or in Address Book itself. Once I enter them, the field cannot be edited or removed. Clicking on the red 'minus' sign does nothing. I know the dates are stored because they show up in iCal correctly. Stranger still, I can see them in my contacts on my iPhone.

Any ideas?
