Can't edit chart data in Word 2008????

So I've been having this issue in Word that when I create a graph and save the document the next time I open up Word it doesn't let me edit the data in excel any more.

I'm saving the files in .docx format since the graphs are nicer but I can't finish them because it doesn't allow me to edit the data.

Help?
