can't export iMovie projects as clips have been deleted

movies that I made on my iPhone are now inaccessible anywhere but my iPhone as the clips that made them were deleted.

I have 3.7 gig of data in iMovie that I would like to move to my rMBP but can't because I deleted the clips comprising them.

This seems ridiculous. There has to be a way to access them.

no one has an answer to this? They are taking up a ton of room on my iPhone.
