So I found a random link to a file thats maybe 500 MB, but I cant figure out what kind of file it is. Don't ask why I downloaded a random file, but what can i do to open the file and figure out what it is?

Right click the file... on the pop up menu that... pops up... select open with...
That will give you a list of apps that can open the 500mb file.

I should point out that if you don't know what kind of a file it is you should not download it. If the file has an extension (.exe, .app, .avi, .mpeg) you can google the extension to see what kind of a file it is.

if you do not know what it is ... let us help you with some sound judgement ... throw it in the trash.

I think the file is encrypted, because only text edit can open it, how can I un-ecrypt it?

If your only motivation is curiosity, just trash it.

Otherwise tell us the extension.

Or hit Cmd + I. What's it say under "Kind"?
