Can't get contacts sync'd

I am using gmail with my IP4 and had no issues with google sync, but its been a while.

So, I just set up a gmail account for my wife and the contacts that are on her phone don't show up in the contacts in her gmail.

I used these instructions here step by step:

I didn't set up her mail on her phone (as in click on the gmail icon when first setting up mail), I just used the steps above.

Now I'm having a problem with google sync. My calendar syncs from IPHONE to gmail, but my contacts won't sync from iphone to gmail. Anybody else have that issue?

What I did was export my contacts from Address Book to gmail. I sync with Address Book, however.
