Fail verification iPhone 11 newb and then some to ios! Just setting up and shut down cloud is that necessary? is iTunes necessary?
Thanks

That sentence doesn’t make sense. Please could you explain a little more?

I'm sorry. Being VERY new to IOS Iphone, It's a bit confusing. After setting up apple ID, And going thru settings and changing some, leaving others, I wanted to install an app - my name was recognized and I was directed to log in. I entered my Apple ID and my password. A tiny window pops up saying "verification failed"
Basically, that's as far as I can get toward app store. I disabled icloud and thought perhaps that was the problem. Did nothing with Itunes. If possible I do not want to use either!
Hope this is more clear.
Sincerely thank you for response.
I just looked thru my email box and see some messages had appeared that I missed a few days ago. Somehow, I DID activate or sign up for Icloud :-(
After a little reading, am I to understand contacts email calendar etc are all maintained on the cloud? Thats not comforting. Learning curve!

sounds like you are typing the wrong password?
no
After at minimum of 8 attempts on different days, I really doubt I mistyped so many times. HOWEVER, I just tried again and this time a message says this apple id has never been used on App store etc etc. So now I get to say ok to yet another 10 page legal document (or get to not use this lil toy). Not only that now they want a credit card info - why? I always shop find what I want then give my financial info. I generally don't purchase apps on cell phones- I'm more of a program kind of guy on a laptop/desktop. I use some apps ie authentication programs and some other utilities. Generally I go for free and look thru the ads( literally thru them as if they dont exist) So anyway, it seems a cc is required to use apple products -AFTER you buy them. Bad Business.
After filling in all requested info, "we've run into a problem. Try again later."
OH so much like microsoft right from the get go

I'm almost certain they require a credit card on file to use the store. It's just the nature of the beast.

You do NOT have to have a card on file on your Apple ID to visit the App Store or anything else on your iPhone (or iPad)....unless you want access to something that involves a fee of an kind. I have never had a card on my Apple ID account.

Ref link above. It does say if a Apple ID is accessing the app store for the first time ever, they may require a card. I don‘t think I had to do that but it was many years ago. Anyway, if need to do that just do it. Download a free app, then close App Store. Then in Apple ID account settings, remove the card.

Edit PS, If you eventually do purchase an app, music, or whatever on you Apple ID (whether you do it on phone or computer), you will have to enter your card of course. It will however then keep that card on file (until you manually remove it from your account).

(mostly what brucemr said above)
A new AppleID account requires you to set up with your credit card info.
Once you have successfully logged in to your account, the go into the account info, then "manage payments" and (IIRC) change the card to "no card", or just choose to remove the card at that time.
I like that, because I can't "accidentally" make a purchase, as it will ask for payment information when you click a "Buy now", and I have no payment info (no card of any kind) in my account.

Here is another good link. It describes how to set up a new Apple ID account without entering any payment info. This is what OP initially did when he set up new phone on iCloud etc.

However...., it says that if you later try to access Books Store, ITunes store, or App Store for the FIRST time, you will then have to enter card info. Ie, essentially everone will eventually be forced to enter card info.

As said before, just enter card to get into App Store first time, then remove card from account (assuming you don’t want it stored there). You will not be asked for card info again to open App Store.
