Can’t Get iTunes Movies To Play In 4K or HDR

Hi All -

I got my brand new Apple TV 4K yesterday and I’m having issues playing iTunes Movies in 4K and HDR.

To confirm my setup, I have a Sony 930C and set the HDMI slot to Enhanced. All HDMI ports are HDCP 2.2 compliant and the HDMI cable is from Blue Jeans and supports 4K HDR.

The weird thing is when I’m in the Apple TV menu it’s in 4K HDR (Picture 1). Also, when I play a 4K title on Netflix it’s in 4K HDR (Picture 2).

When playing a 4K title from iTunes it only streams in HD (assuming 1080p) in SDR. I cannot get it to play in 4K HDR (Picture 3).

Any ideas on how I can fix this? My internet is hooked up via Ethernet cable and running at 100/100 speeds. My TV only supports HDR 10, but seeing as the Apple TV Menu and Netflix works I assume it’s an issue with iTunes Movies.

FYI - The 4K badge appears in iTunes before playing the movie, but I can only see HD while playing (with HDR disabled).

I had a similar problem with mine at first. I spent a couple of hours with tech support eventually getting a tech supervisor involved. We tried everything and as a last resort he had me go into Settings>Apps>iTunes Movies and TV Shows>Quick Start>On. Mine was off. It sounded just opposite to me, quick start on rather than off, but that worked. My iTunes movies now play in 4K HDR and DV.

We tried everything and as a last resort he had me go into Settings>Apps>iTunes Movies and TV Shows>Quick Start>On. Mine was off. It sounded just opposite to me, quick start on rather than off, but that worked. My iTunes movies now play in 4K HDR and DV.

Yes - for example, I purchased Atomic Blonde two days ago on iTunes...and on the menu it says 4K but when I play it, it only shows HD SDR.


I disabled “Quick Start” so I could guarantee it plays in 4K...the screen goes black then this appears and nothing ever happens. When I turn on “Quick Start” it plays properly, but only in HD/SDR.


I don’t think the pop up on this screen is correct because as you can see in my original post (Picture 1 and 2) 4K HDR works on the Home Screen and within Netflix on 4K content.


I’m super confused.

How did you obtain John Wick 2? Only direct purchases or direct code redeems will give you 4K rights in iTunes. iTunes will always show the highest quality available, regardless if you own it.

Looks like you posted just as I did. Weird if you purchased Atomic Blonde on iTunes and it doesn't give you 4K HDR. The Quick Start always needs to be ON for 4K. It's a poorly worded setting that doesn't mention 4K....but basically you'll never get 4K if you turn it off.

If you set the ATV to 4K SDR, do the iTunes movies stream in 4K or HD?
Do you have Match dynamic range on or off?

Okay - Quick Start is definitely back on.

I currently have it on 4:2:2 (I can try 4:2:0 when I get home) and I have the Dynamic Range and Frame match ON. Should I turn that off?

And I’ll try disabling HDR tonight to see if 4K works properly when I get home.

I would try 4:2:0 just to see if there is any difference. Dynamic Range and Frame Rate both ON is fine. I'm trying to rack my brain to figure out why the UI and Netflix are working buy iTunes movies aren't. The older X930C does enhanced on all four HDMI ports correct? I know my X930E is only enhanced on 2 & 3.

Yes - the 930C is HDCP compatible on all HDMI sports. I have NO idea why Netflix and the Homescreen UI is working but iTunes movies aren’t lol.

I’m going to restart everything tonight and I’ll report back!
