Cant get more than 44.1khz out of mac pro?

Hi all,

I have recently purchased a Cambridge Audio DacMagic Plus for my HiFi (Cambridge Audio A&R A60 amp with Linn Kan speakers), I have connected my 2009 Mac Pro to the dac via optical audio and it sounds fantastic. However, the incoming sample rate on the dac always sits at 44.1.khz even though according to iTunes the sample rate of my music (Apple lossless) is 96khz or 88khz.

I have also tried playing the same files through VLC with no luck..

Does anyone have any ideas?

You should be able to adjust the devices sample rate in Audio/Midi Setup. (This application is in your Utilities app folder.)
Open up Audio/Midi Setup, find your device, and select a samplerate.

Ah! Just read this 10 minutes after paying £7 for bit perfect!

With the format set to 96khz in midi setup even my 44.1khz songs are being detected as 96khz by my dac, don't suppose you know if iTunes upscales audio to whatever this setting is or is it actually still 44.1khz? The only reason I ask is that if it's upscaling I will stick to bit perfect as I want all the upscaling to be done by my dac which will no doubt do a better job of it..

Not sure if iTunes is upsampling the files or not, and I don't have experience with Bit Perfect. Do a search and see if you can find out for sure what's going on, as I'm interested as well. I don't have time to research at the moment.

But in short yes it looks like whatever sample rate you set in midi audio settings itunes will then upscale or downscale your music to match that sample rate.

The beauty of Bit Perfect is that you can still use itunes but it will adjust the sample rate to match each song without ever upscaling or downscaling which is perfect for people with dacs..

Good to know, I figured iTunes was up sampling but didn't know for sure.
Thanks for the link. I might have to get BitPerfect now as well.
