When I boot up, I am greeted with the following notice, which I can't get rid of: A 422 mb download is required to use speech recognition features in Dictation. Nothing I have tried will close it down. I then have to hold the on/off button in order to shut down. All help appreciated. It's driving me mad!

Update. I have now gone a little deeper into this issue, and will explain what the situation really is. I have two separate accounts on my iMac, and use 2 browsers, Safari and Firefox, on each. The problem only manifests itself on account A on the Firefox browser. Safari is fine. I have no trouble at all with either of the browsers on the second account. By the way, I have never used or installed Dictation, whatever it may be.

Hi! Have you tried checking Firefox extensions to see what's in there? You can open Firefox and paste "about:addons" in the search bar. Maybe you installed some extensions for Text To Speach support and now they're trying to update. If that's not the case, check macOS dictation - maybe there's a setting you missed

Thanks, appitech. What I finally did, and it seemed the only way out, was to allow the Dictation download to go ahead. I am now stuck with it, for the time being at least. I am now plagued by another, more disturbing phenomonen, the sound of a short ringtone every few minutes. Never the same tune twice. This occurs even if I am not displaying any web pages, just the desktop. I have never noticed this before, and wonder if it might be connected to the Dictation download. Woe is me! Edit. Just remembered....... I installed Disk Doctor, yesterday. Mmmmm...

So, this ringtone also appears when you use Firefox? If you beleive the tune is not related to a certain browser, check system preferences -> notifications - there you can find a list of apps that are allowed to show you notifications and turn off the ones you don't need.

Well, it all went back to normal, so I'll probably never get to the bottom of it. It wasn't a tune, by the way, just a different burst of notes each time. Just one thing more. I checked Malwarebites, and it had quarantined a malware program which I promptly deleted. Something to do with adware. On reflection, that could have been it. Thanks once again.
