Can't go back to previous slide in Keynote '08 or '09

On two different Macs, in Keynote '08 & '09, I can't go back to a previous slide while I am in Play/Presentation mode. I tried all the keyboard shortcuts and none of them work. Couldn't find an option in Preferences to make this happen. Am I missing something or is this a bug? Thanks.
