can't import from SD card into iMovie 11

I have a lab of MacBook Pros with iMovie 11 (version 9.0.7). They were cloned, so they are all be the same OS 10.9.3, yet on one, when I insert an SD card from my camera, it does not activate the import window. The files are .mp4 and they work fine on all other MacBook Pros. I can go to File>Import>Movies to import, but it shows me a different interface that does not have the thumbnails. I'd like the process to be the same across all laptops, so my students don't get confused by the different process. I have tried several SD cards with video footage and none of them work on this one, yet they all work on the other MacBook Pros. Any ideas why this is happening? Is there a preference setting that could be different?
