Can't install Jailbroken/Non-Jailbroken Firmware on iPhone 3G - Either fails or hangs

Help!
I know its not possible to brick this, but why can't i upgrade or go back down anymore! The phone is hanging when i restore it or it gives me an error. I've been trying to figure this out for nearly 15 hours.
