I have the Mavericks download on my iTunes/App store from back in the day.

My boss is still running Snow Leopard on his mid 2011 iMac.

How do I get 10.9.5 installed on his computer?

Can I import his settings/data from a TM backup on an external Mavericks HD and then clone it back to his original iMac HD?

Cleanest way to do this:

  1. TM Backup everything from your boss' iMac to an external drive.
  2. create an install USB stick of Mavericks (See Post #3 of this thread).
  3. Boot to the USB stick.
  4. Install Mavericks on your Boss' iMac.
  5. During the install process, you will be asked if you want to import data from a TM backup, Windows Share, or another Mac. say yes, and select your TM backup (be sure that your TM backup is connected to your iMac. It is okay to plug it in prior to doing the install, as the installer will not install over a TM backup; be sure to select the proper drive for installing the OS, just to be sure).
  6. Let the installer do its work.
  7. You will have a clean install of Mavericks, with your boss' data completely restored from TM.
That should do it. Worked for me from Lion - Mountain Lion - Mavericks - Yosemite - El Capitan, each with clean installs. You will need an 8GB or larger USB stick to do this.
