cant install updates

I am having problems with both my old macbook pro and my new 2012 macbook pro installing updates. I finally got 10.7.4 to install on my older model but no matter what i try and can not get OSX to validate the download for the 10.7.4 patch on the new macbook. I have tried using wired connection, and wireless, the router/modem is a combo unit unfortunatly so i can not try a different router.

anyone have any other suggestions?

plugged directly into the modem/router and finally got the OSX update installed, guess some packets are getting lost somewhere along my network.
