ok, my office neighbor has a new powerbook (envy) and all of a sudden can't log in when he starts it up.

He ALWAYS uses the same password - for everything, so that cant be wrong. After 3 times it does not offer a question hint (isnt it suposed to?) ...

Anyway, is there a way to get past this?

The hint is optional, so that could be why it doesn't appear. As for bypassing the login screen, try booting from the installation disc. In one of the menus, there is something about resetting the master password.

tried that 3 times - still does not work?
1st try with OSx.2 disc,
then with OSx.3 that just came in fed-x?

other thoughts? He called the local genius bar, they said the same thing, and were out of ideas when that did not work.

It prevents you from booting from an external disk without a password. Apparently it's the ultimate line of defense against unauthorized access. The stuff I read on it says to kiss your information goodbye if you forget your login password and the OF password as well.
