After a recent reinstall of OS X, some mornings I'll find my iMac's fan will be at full speed and I can't seem to get into the system, seeing only the spinning beachball after entering my login password. The only thing I can do is a forced shutdown via the power button.
Is there some way I can diagnose which application is causing this? If I could see the Activity Monitor it would be dead easy but because I can't get into the system I can't use that...
