The Waste
I just upgraded my iPhone 3G firmware to the iOS 4.2 beta. While I was doing so, I noticed that the last backup iTunes did of my phone was in June. When I right-click or option-click my iPhone under the Devices section of iTunes (10.1 beta 2), I don't get the option to backup (photo below). How can I force a backup of my device?

Hmmm....I installed the 10.1 beta on my brother's computer, plugged in my iPhone, and the backup option was listed on his machine. So it appears that the problem is localized to my MBP. Might there be a .plist file or something I can erase to solve the issue? Or do I need to eradicate all traces of iTunes, reinstall and hope for the best?

Hi, don't know if you've managed to fix this yet (Its a relatively recent post...ish.), however I just recently had this problem too and managed to find a nifty solution.

Check it out: http://www.avforums.com/forums/iphone/852035-fix-no-backup-option-itunes-8-a.html

Found this and it works.

Quit iTunes and open terminal and type "defaults write com.apple.iTunes DeviceBackupsDisabled -bool false" without the quotes, then open iTunes again and the backup option is available.

Thought it may be useful.
