Hi all,
I don't have Internet at home and I've been trying to update to 4.1 manually... But it wont let me! I direct downloaded the correct file, then plugged in my iPhone. I selected the device in itunes10 and the. Held down "option" and clicked "update" I selected the downloaded file and it looked like everything was working. But, then it said that it couldn't install the update because it couldn't reach the apple update server... Isn't that the point? So t doesn't need to hit the server? What am I doing wrong? Any help? Thanks!

try disabling ur anti virus program before you upgrade, after it downloaded the file and install it, then re-enable ur anti virus program again.

Unless you have previously jailbroken your phone and backed up your SHSH file, you have to have an internet connection to run the update.

It has to be authenticated by Apple in order to complete the installation.

You don't have to update it with the same computer that you sync it with.

Plug it into any computer with iTunes.

Let the backup complete.

Run the update.

You should be fine now. If anything is missing, do the following:

Check to make sure all of your apps are there. If they're not, download them.

Restore from backup.
