Cant open large .mov file

I recently shot a large (1 GB) movie and uploaded it to my new Macbook Pro. Then when i hit play, it said "The document “sample.MOV” could not be opened. The movie is not in a format that QuickTime Player understands." What should i do?

Shot with what camera, specifically? Hard to offer any advice without knowing that.

Also, for reference, what happens if you give it to VLC or MPlayer OSX Extended? Can those play it?
