Can't pair Apple wireless keyboard with MBP

So, trying to pair a Apple wireless keyboard(takes two AA batteries) with my MBP Mid 2014 via Bluetooth. I go to Bluetooth system preferences and turn my keyboard on. My Mac detects the keyboard and i click pair, i then enter the 6 number digits on the keyboard with no problems. However it then asks me to "press the return key", i do and it doesn't register. Ultimately it times out and says "pairing failed".
I think I'm missing something basic here, but don't know what?

I have:
Restarted both keyboard and Mac
Changed the batteries
Been able to pair other devices via bluetooth

Maybe the keyboard has a defective enter key. Have you tried pairing with another device?
