Can't pair iPhone 3 with Apple wireless keyboard

So I bought a new aluminum Apple bluetooth wireless keyboard. I cannot get it to pair with my iPhone 3. I turned on the keyboard so the little green light is flashing. I went to Settings/General/Bluetooth and it is searching for devices but never "finds" the keyboard. Are there any tips on how to get this to work?

3G doesn't work with bluetooth keyboards. 3GS does.

Which one is it?

i'm not sure if it is 3g or 3gs, how can i determine?

The lettering on the back of the 3GS is shiny foiled printing. On the 3G it's just dull grey.

3GS will run iOS 5, 3G is stuck with 4.2.1
