the problem described shortly.
i can't partition my hard drive. when i try to partition it the message says i/o error.
now the long version.
the costumer brought in a laptop saying that the os was acting erraticly. i turned it on, the os kept crashing and freezing. ran the disk utility from the leopard cd and saw that SMART said that hard drive is failing. fair enough. took out a new hard drive, put it in, booted through the cd, and the disk utility can't see the drive.
took out the hard drive, put a different one (different brand and capacity) and booted through the os cd, same thing- leopard can't see it. now i realize the problem is not the drive. put the first new drive in an enclosure and it formats fine. put the drive back in now i can see the drive, but the partition is gone. i try to partition and can't- says i/o failure.
now i saw a similar problem before. a fellow technician installed a new hard drive in a macbook and the disk utility wouldnt recognize it. he did a thing through the terminal. im assuming basicly the same disutil program through command line. the question is why such a thing would happen. and more importanly how can i narrow down my troubleshooting. im thinking either motherboard or hard drive cable. still im thinking about that weird issue that we had with the macbook (any explanations on that one)
