Can't partition USB hard drive

I've got a USB hard drive. Every time I try to partition it with Disk Utility, I get an error message saying it "timed out". The hard drive used to be an OS X boot disk. The only partition it has at the moment is the blank 200MB EFI partition.

Any help?

Have you tried to completely re-format it again first?

Yes, I get the error whenever I try to erase it or partition or format.

The drive is mechanically working fine, so it's not a hardware issue.

Never mind, eventually got it to work, by first erasing the EFI partition.
