I'm trying to partition my external to boot Snow Leopard from. I've got 80gb of free space on it, and I'm only trying to make a 12gb partition. It lags at "Modifying Partition Map" and then I get an error.

This is the drive that I use for Time Machine. Maybe that has something to do with it?

I can't partition my MBP's drive either, since I apparently need to re-install Leopard and restore a backup to put everything on the HD in one clean chunk instead of spread throughout. (from what I am reading)

Too bad I:
1- Don't have enough space on my external to make a backup
2- Don't want to delete my time machine to clear space, especially while trying to do these things

Any ideas on why I'm having trouble partitioning the external drive? It's a 500gb drive and I connect using firewire 800.
