Can't play 1 certain AVI file

Hello All

First post so apologies if it's in the wrong place!

I have a macBook Air and I have downloaded a few movies in AVI format and all work bar one, if I double click on the thumbnail it opens the video screen but if I click play nothing happens?

However the video will play if I click the small "play" icon in the thumbnail preview screen and it also plays if I double click and select "quick look"

It just doesn't work if I double click the video.

I am using quicktime with perian.

any help will be greatly appreciated!

Does it play with VLC Player or Movist? If not:
In order to find out, what may be wrong with your video, you can use the following three applications to analyse a sample video file.

• VideoSpec (free)
• MediaInfo (free)
• Media Inspector (2.99 USD € in the Mac App Store (MAS))

When done, you can use the "Report" (VideoSpec) and "Export" (Media Inspector) button to export a report,
attachable to your next post via the

button.
In MediaInfo you have to go to the Menu Bar, select View > Text and copy the text via CMD+A > CMD+C and paste it via CMD+V into your next post.​

Yes it does play in VLC!

it is just strange that it will play in the preview screen and the quick look but not when I double click it in quicktime?

In VLC do you have to open the video in VLC or can you set certain videos to automatically open with it?

You may want to give Perian a try. It will let you play a wider array of videos in Quicktime.

Yes you can set VLC to open certain type files by default.
Click on the file, hit command + I, an info window will open. At the bottom of that window, you will see "open with". Change that to VLC, then click change all.

I agree. But VLC is too unstable to be a primary video player. Latest stable build is constantly crashing on quit or when loading libraries from networked drives. Quicktime handles non-local media with much more grace, although it is much more limited than VLC.

I use VLC to test videos or watch on the fly videos...but I use Plex for actually watching and aggregating movies.
