Can’t play audio over Bluetooth when Apple Watch connected

I can’t stream audio from my iPhone 12 Pro Max to Bluetooth speakers while my Apple Watch is connected to the phone for some reason. Basically I go to switch the audio from the phone to bluetooth and it spins but never actually switches over to the device and goes back to playing through the phone. Through trial and error I determined that this problem goes away if I have my Apple Watch turned off or not connected until after the music is playing over Bluetooth. What could cause this?
